European roulette is a type of single
wheel roulette that can be found in most casinos across Europe. This type of roulette is actually closest to the original game of roulette, which was devised in France in the 17th century. En Prison Rule in European Roulette
The "en prison" rule is a special player favorable rule found in European roulette. With this rule, if a player makes an even money bet (such as even, odd, red, black, 1-18, 19-36) and the ball lands in the zero slot, the player either gets half of their bet back or the bet becomes imprisoned. If an imprisoned bet wins on the next spin of the roulette wheel, the player receives their full imprisoned bet back, but without any winnings on the original bet.
La Partage Rule in European Roulette
Another additional rule found in some European roulette games is the "La Partage" rule. This rule is a variation of the "en prison" rule. The "La Partage" rule simply offers half of your bet back when the ball lands in the zero slot, without the option of imprisoning.
European Roulette Table
European roulette uses a standard traditional sized
roulette table. The European table layout consists of an inside area for every single individual corresponding wheel number and an outside area for combination bets, identical to the table layout seen in almost all other types of roulette games.
European Roulette Wheel
There is a total of 37 numbers (slots) on the European roulette wheel. The roulette numbers on the standard European wheel are numbers 1-36 and zero (0). The zero slot on the European wheel, which is generally green, is where the casino gains their house edge. This slot is neither red or black or even or odd and is created to kill even money bets.

In European roulette, the game is played using standard casino chips. This type of roulette can often seem more confusing for both players and the croupier (dealer) because it can be difficult to keep track of each individual player's chips. With the addition of the "en prison" rule and the "la partage" rule, the house edge on even money bets is lowered to 2.63% on those bets. There are some European roulette games which offer even slighter house odds around 1.35%, depending on the specific imprisonment rules.
