American roulette is a type of double
wheel roulette that is played across most American casinos. Roulette was introduced to America in the 1800's but several changes were made to the original
European roulette game for the American casino industry. There are a few casinos in America that offer European roulette but the majority play American roulette.
The game of American roulette is played by all of the standard
roulette rules. The only differences in this type of roulette are slight variations with the table, the wheel, the chips, and the
odds. American roulette does not offer imprisonment rules but does sometimes offer a surrender rule. The key differences are explained below.
American Roulette Table
American roulette uses a standard
roulette table but the table is often smaller than traditional roulette tables. The table layout consists of an inside area for every single individual corresponding wheel number and an outside area for combination
bets.
American Roulette Wheel
There is a total of 38 numbers (slots) on the American roulette wheel. In addition to the standard roulette numbers of 1-36 and zero (0), the American roulette wheel also features a double-zero (00) slot. The double-zero slot on the wheel functions identically to the single-zero slot. The addition of the double-zero slot gives the casino a higher advantage in this type roulette.
American Roulette Chips
Chips in American roulette are considered to be "non-value" chips. This means that all chips belonging to the same player have the exact same value. The value is determined by the dealer when the player first purchases the chips. These chips only have a monetary value at the roulette table. They can not be used for playing other casino games. American roulette uses a large variety of different colored chips. The multiple chip colors are designed to help players keep track of their own chips and to prevent table confusion.
American Roulette Odds
In American roulette, the house edge on most bets is 1/19 (5.26%). The only bet that these numbers do not apply to is the 0-00-1-2-3 combination bet. This combination bet has a much higher house edge of 7.89%. The odds in American roulette favor the casino slightly more compared to other types of roulette that feature a single wheel.
Sometimes a rule known as "surrender" is offered. When this rule is in a place, and the ball lands in a single or double zero pocket you have half the value of your even money bets returned to you. This rule reduces the house edge to 2.63%.
