Types of Roulette

While the game of roulette is generally played the same in most casinos, there are several different variations and types of roulette you might come across. It's extremely important to learn the details about the multiple types of roulette. By understanding the different types of roulette, you will always know the variation differences and will never have a problem choosing which game is best for you. The main two types of roulette are divided into how many zero's (0's) the roulette wheel features.

Single Zero Roulette - European Roulette

The first major type of roulette is known as single-zero roulette commonly refered to as European roulette. This is a roulette game which features a single-zero roulette wheel. The wheel contains slots for the numbers 1-36, in addition to a zero (0) slot. This type of roulette game provides a house edge of 1/37, 2.70%. The house edge is the slightest in single-zero roulette which makes this the type of roulette you want to look for.

Double Zero Roulette - American Roulette

The second major type of roulette is known as double-zero roulette and is commonly refered to as American roulette. This type of roulette uses a double-zero roulette wheel. The double-zero wheel contains the same numbers as the single-zero wheel, with the addition of a double-zero (00) slot. The house edge for this type of roulette is 1/19, 5.26%. This is the type of roulette you will find in most American casinos.

If you ever have the choice between playing double-zero roulette and playing single-zero roulette, always choose the double-zero game.

Other Types of Roulette

In addition to the two main types of roulette (single-zero and double-zero), there are several other roulette variations. There are several other roulette games that are generally played the same but have slightly different rules, odds, and other small differences. For more detailed information on these individual roulette games, see our roulette rules page.
